Abstract

With the increasing mechanisation of the world, the demand for industrial raw materials is growing steadily. Often, however, the extraction of these raw materials is by no means unproblematic, as it can lead to the exploitation of labour, the pollution of the environment and more far-reaching potential for damage. Therefore, in this paper we want to deal with the mining of the mineral coltan, which has received little attention in criminological research so far. In doing so, we bring together different theoretical concepts in order to shed light on the actors involved in mining, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and to show relationships, ostensibly with the two German companies H. C. Starck and Masingiro GmbH. As a result, this case study brings us to a new concept for describing and interpreting complex interactions of transnational actors which promises to better capture and combat white-collar crime in general.
